I mean I get it ...
Everyone is politically, morally and ethically incorrect to a certain extent. And everyone has got the right to be crude, offensive, di**heads and A**holes when they are in their private settings because we humans, sometimes, no matter how rare that is, enjoy such crudeness and shallowness in a particular setting where we, sometimes, even just for the sake of our connection and long association with those groups, pretend not to notice certain offensive and indefensible things.
These situations, often, are the result of the maze of life that we have navigated to reach wherever we are now, but it should not mean that this becomes a public norm and we accept it as the common and general truth of societal existence. But somehow, social media has done that generalization to a scary level.
If one looks closely, one can say that the major fault lies with the algorithms of social media giants like @Meta and @X which decide the content on one’s timeline. The concerning thing is that the top results around the content to be displayed on the timelines is based on the viralability of the content in concern while having nothing to do with the logical, ethical and societal value of such content.
Now, I do not have any problem with such content being created and watched on purpose, but what about the problem of seeing this obscene content on our timeline just because it has hooked a lot of people and the companies want you to hooked up on their website which is why they are dumping whole timelines with such content.
I think these tech-giants should start taking the responsibility for the decisions taken by their algorithms as this can not be left on the common sense of the common people because common sense, for the matter of fact, is not that common. And these so-called well-mannered and well-cultured people trying to believe that they are being the agents of positive social change are also the culprits to the same degree. Most of the time these people are the ones who help such content go viral (knowingly or unknowingly, I cannot claim).
It should be common knowledge for these tech players that the impacts they have on the common psyche is immense and they have a responsibility which is the result of the number of people engaging on these social media platforms.
Furthermore, those aiming to be influencers, should also understand their responsibility. They should know that creating content is very easy. Anyone can do that but the important thing is to make quality content with the aim of presenting your own personal thought process and making sure that you actually have something to say.
We should be wary of the fact that all the content that we are consuming is there not because we humans have started to have so much, rather the case is that we are saying a lot without having anything worth saying.
The obscene content is not a new discovery among human cultures. We Indians, and I am quite positive about all the human cultures, have a very long history of such obscene content for the purposes of entertainment. But the concerning part is that the social media has made it accessible for almost everyone on the planet and the algorithms have hacked our minds (and of the creators also) in believing that the viralabiity is the true test to decide upon the quality of content and the engagement is the true pinnacle of the talent to create content. I wonder when we will realize that this assumption of our collective thought process is as far from everything of consequence as it can be.
